Automated Pipettors

ICCB-Longwood utilizes several different pipettor based liquid handling instruments. Each of these is versatile in its capabilities and designed for precision pipetting.   

Agilent Bravo

Agilent Bravo

The Agilent Bravo is a versatile liquid handler enclosed in a Baker Bioprotect II hood. This instrument has an open air flow design and both 96- and 384-channel disposable tip pipette heads, with volume ranges from 0.5 to 200 uL. It is primarily used for siRNA liquid handling, including both screening and library reformatting.

This instrument is operated by ICCB-Longwood Screening Facility staff members.

Agilent Vprep

Agilent Vprep

The Agilent VPrep is a precision pipettor system that features interchangeable heads. ICCB-L has 96- and 384-channel disposable tip pipette heads, with volume ranges from 0.5 to 200 uL. This liquid handler features eight moveable shelves, two of which are for disposable tip boxes. The ICCB-L primarily uses this system for small molecule reformatting and staff-assisted volume transfers.

This instrument is operated by ICCB-Longwood Screening Facility staff members.

Hamilton STARlet

Hamilton STARlet

The Hamilton Microlab STARlet is a versatile liquid handling platform utilizing a Span-8 pipetting head for serial dilutions and microplate re-arraying and a 96-channel pipette head for whole plate dispensing. It features a gripper for moving labware about the deck. The accurate pipetting range on this platform is from 5 uL to 1000 uL.

Tecan Evo75

Tecan Evo75

The “Hit Picker” at the ICCB-L Screening Facility is comprised of two instruments, the Tecan EVO75 Liquid Handling Platform (left), and a Velocity11 2R BenchCel Stacker (right) integrated together using Visual Basic programming. The EVO75 has 2 independent disposable tips (DiTis) and is capable of picking a maximum of 300 wells per hour. A bar code reader has been incorporated into the system for tracking plates and real-time error detection. The EVO75 can accommodate both 96- and 384-well plates, and volume ranges from 1 uL to 250 uL. A comma separated (.csv) input file is used as the source for the picks.

Tecan Evo150

The Tecan EVO150 Liquid Handling Platform is integrated with a Velocity11 2R BenchCel Stacker using Visual Basic programming. The EVO150 has 8 independent disposable tips (DiTis) and is capable of picking a hundreds of wells per hour. A bar code reader has been incorporated into the system for tracking plates and real-time error detection. The EVO150 can accommodate both 96- and 384-well plates, and volume ranges from 1 uL to 250 uL. A comma separated (.csv) input file is used as the source for the picks.

CyBio CyBi-Well Vario

CyBio CyBi-Well Vario

  • Interchangeable 96 and 384-channel pipette heads.
  • Accurately pipette volumes between 1 uL to 225 uL using disposable pipette tips.
  • Pipettor requires a volume as low as 5 mL to cover the bottom of the reservoir.
  • Equipped with two stacker systems that allow for unattended use.

The CyBio can be used for cherry pick screening:

  • Uses PocketTips to transfer small volume of compounds from cherry pick plate into assay plate.
  • Allow transfers of 50 nL or 250 nL from 1.5 uL of the cherry pick sample in DMSO.
  • Protocol requires that cherry pick samples are in AB1056 microplates in volumes 0.6-2 uL per well.
  • Plates should be spun down in a centrifuge at 1000 rpm for 1 minute immediately prior to use.
  • Destination assay plates should contain 30 uL of media or assay buffer.
  • Separate PocketTip used for each replicate.
  • PocketTips are recharged per tip used.
  • Re-racking of tips is done by the investigator to save on tips used and cost.
